Jamu Postnatal Massage Contest Winner
Established since 2008, Origins Jamu Massage was born out of passion and a mission to educate mothers the importance of postpartum care afterbirth. They offer unique incorporation of lactation services and hot stone compressed combined with tradition techniques of Jamu Postnatal massage.
We are happy to feature Kelly Teh, the 1st prize winner of Jamu Postnatal Massage Package with Origins Jamu Massage. Here’s what she has to say about her winning:
“My overall experience with Origins Jamu Massage postnatal services has been a very pleasant and joyful one! My three personal favourite massages are the head, full body and back massages. I especially enjoyed the above three. I believe the Jamu postnatal massage has helped me to relax, and release much of the tension on my stiff body, and aided in getting rid of the trapped ‘wind’ in my body. I could also see the results of the lactation massage. It helped to promote a better and smoother milk flow when I breastfed my baby.
Not forgetting the baby massage class. It was really lovely and beneficial for both me and my baby. I enjoyed the session thoroughly as it helped to closely bond with me and my baby. I would definitely recommend modern mummies to try a Jamu postnatal massage. I not only manage to release the excess ‘wind’ in my body, it aided in my relaxation, healed and restored my body without compromising any of the special body conditions of a woman who has just given birth.”
The prize was sponsored by Origins Jamu Massage- Specialist in Jamu Postnatal Massage.

The Science And Art of Chinese Name
Ming Hui (明辉) has just undergone a divorce proceeding with his wife of 3 years. He just could not continue with her unreasonableness and the frequent verbal abuse hurled at him. He decided to end the marriage as he is not able to mentally cope with it anymore.
Looking dejected and emotionally drained, he complains that luck has never been with him. He has always been a responsible finance officer who quietly takes on whatever workload that his boss has passed on to him and tried to work overtime to meet the deadlines.
Sometimes, the colleagues would unsympathetically play taiji and push projects that are deemed as tedious and unglamorous to Ming Hui as they know that he will never say no. Nevertheless, he has only been promoted once having been with the company for almost 15 years. His bosses do not really appreciate him despite the fact that he is hardworking and seldom takes medical leave.
Born in the year of rat, Ming Hui’s Chinese name has seriously violated the principles laid down in the Animal Signs Chinese Name System (生肖姓名学). The rats are nocturnal group of species that become active and alert after the sun sets. Their cleverness, resilience, adaptability and other talents are revealed during the dark. When the daylight comes, it is time they go back to their hidings to avoid being “grilled” under the heat and the sun. For many years, this is how the rats have co-existed with the human beings.
If you look carefully at Ming Hui’s Chinese characters, you will notice that the Chinese radicals (部首) “日” and “光” are present in his name. They mean sun and light respectively. There is a quote in this system that says “老鼠见光死”. In English it implies that rat will die when it sees the light. In real life situation, people born in the rat year having such Chinese character in their names will face a lot of obstacles in life, bullied by friends and colleagues, suffered from estranged relationship with spouse and even health issues. They will also tend to be introvert, timid, unsociable and lack of confidence.
Ming Hui’s Chinese name literally means “bright and brilliance”. He has his talents but it just cannot shine. If Ming Hui were to born in the year of other animal sign, his destiny path would be different. Alternatively, he can choose to change the characters in his Chinese name to improve his luck, which is quite a common practice in countries like Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Other Chinese radicals that are inauspicious for rat will be:
- 人 (example 仁,健)
- 日 (example 昌,易)
- 蛇 (example 弓,芝)
- 虫 (example 融,虹)
- 午 (example 南, 丹)
- 羊 (example 美,祥)
There are lots more examples but I will just name a few.
On the other hand, Chinese radicals that will be good to have in Chinese names for rat people will be:
- 穴 (example 家,宏)
- 口 (example 国,可)
- 禾 (example 秀,和)
- 豆 (example 登,丰)
- 金 (example 铭,铃)
- 门 (example 尚,高)
I will not go too in depth in this article on the logics that how we arrive at the (in)appropriate radicals for people born in rat year as it hinges on certain technicalities arising from the study of Ba Zi (八字学) – an established Chinese destiny analysis system.
To understand the complexity and essence of Chinese Name System, one would need to have certain fundamental knowledge in the field of Chinese metaphysics and insights of Wen Zi (文字), which primarily entail the 4 following philosophies:
- Pictorial Representation (形)
- Aural Representation (音)
- Meaning of the Chinese Characters (意)
- Numerical Representation (数)
A holistic approach should be adopted when the parents are searching for chinese names for their newborn so that the carefully selected words can be pictorially beautiful, auditory pleasing and most importantly, perpetuate the significance of the names that contains calculated auspicious strokes.
The same principles are being applied to people who would like to have their Chinese name changed so that they can enjoy a better life journey in terms of career, marriage, wealth, health, authority, relationship with children, studies, people luck and etc.
In my next article, I will delve deeper into the anatomy of our Chinese names particularly into the areas that our surname, first and second names govern in our destiny. I will also reveal to you why you should never have a single Chinese name (单名) for your daughter.

GD Baby’s Programs (S) Pte Ltd
For over 20 years, Glenn Doman Baby’s Programs (S) Pte Ltd, in partnership with The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential® (I.A.H.P.) in Philadelphia, USA, has been helping parents and their baby to achieve baby’s full potential.
Glenn Doman Baby’s Programs (S) Pte Ltd has been advocating the benefits of home-based early learning in babies and young children to countless numbers of families in Singapore and the region. Thousands of families are now under the Glenn Doman family. We remain a keen advocator that learning and absorbing information is brain function. This is because young children are spontaneous learners and can absorb information effortlessly. In fact, they find enormous pleasure in doing so.
Mothers know intuitively that the first months of life are vital to the long-term well-being of their children. But parents do not have the information they need to use these first months to their baby’s best advantage, or to make the first six years of life as stimulating and rewarding as they could and should be. That’s because until now, the world has had little understanding of the true potential of a newborn.
Mr Lawrence Lee has over twenty years of experience instructing and guiding parents to teach their children based on the works of Glenn Doman to achieve their child’s potential, mainly the Your Smart Baby’s Newborn Program, How To Teach Your Baby To Read Program, How To Teach Your Baby Math Program & How To Teach Your Baby Encyclopedic Bits Program.
He has taught and helped well over 20,000 parents with babies from the ages of birth to six years.
Workshops are conducted to teach and program schedules are provided to explain to parents on how to begin, how to organize necessary materials, how to expand each program and how to further fully develop their child’s reading & learning potential.
Children under the Early Development Program have gained great progress with parents as their teachers. One of Glenn Doman’s most favourite quotes is, “Parents are the best teachers and babies are the best students in the world.” After parents gain more knowledge about early development, their children have better reading skills and habits. Children are easily taught when the parents have the proper knowledge about teaching.
Your Smart Baby’s Newborn Program
The Newborn Program provide parents with all the information they need to help their baby achieve his or her full potential and explain the newborn’s growth and development, including all of the critical stages involved. Guide parents in creating a home environment that enhances and enriches brain development, understand the developmental profile, which parents complete, allows parents to track the progress of their child, to determine the baby’s strengths, and to recognize where additional stimulation and opportunity are needed. Most importantly, parents learn how to design an effective and balanced daily program for physical and intellectual growth.
When parents understand how their child develops, they can become the best teachers their babies will ever have. Best of all, this joyous program brings parents and babies closer together, establishing a life-long bond of learning and love.
How to Teach Your Baby to Read Program (English/ Mandarin)

The Read Program shows just how easy and pleasurable it is to teach your child to read by providing skills that are basic to academic success. We will teach and explain to parents on how to begin and expand the reading program, how to organize necessary materials, and how to further fully develop your child’s reading potential.
How to Teach Your Baby Math Program
The Math Program shows just how easy and pleasurable it is to teach your child mathematics through the development of thinking and reasoning skills.
We will teach and explain to parents on how to begin and expand the math program, how to organize necessary materials, and how to further fully develop your child’s math potential.
How to Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Bits Program
The Encyclopedic Program shows just how easy and pleasurable it is to teach your child about the arts, science, and nature.
Your child will recognize the insects in the garden, know the countries of the world, discover the beauty of a painting by Van Gogh, and much more. We will teach & explain to parents on how to begin and expand this remarkable program, how to make and organize necessary materials, and how to further fully develop your child’s learning ability.

Oh Myopia!
Understanding and battling short-sightedness in Singapore
Does my child have myopia? How common is it, and how can I arrest the problem? These are some common concerns among parents in Singapore, particularly with the increasing rate of short-sightedness among children here. Research shows that a quarter of our children need eye glasses by the age of seven, and 8 in 10 Singaporeans are myopic by the time they turn 18. Many optometrists also report seeing younger patients, some as little as 4 years old. Therefore, it is important for parents to learn how to spot the early danger signs, particularly if you and your spouse have myopia.

Young kids are often not aware of their vision problems, so if you see them squinting regularly or watching television at close range, you should take them to see a certified optometrist immediately. A child’s vision continues to change up to the age of 8. If problems are not identified early, he or she may develop permanent eye disorders like ‘lazy eye’ which may complicates matters.
Regular Eye Check Ups
Parents should also arrange for regular eye checks for their children and obtain new glasses whenever required, as accurate refractive error corrections for distance and near vision can help to manage myopia progression. With the wide array of options available in the market, parents often find themselves spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the right lens and frame. However, greater priority should be placed on getting the best lenses for their children during those critical years. Some lens manufacturers have produced innovative technology, which represent the latest in childhood myopia therapy.
MyoVision™ by ZEISS, for example, was developed using Peripheral Vision Management Technology which can reportedly help control myopia progression in children. Research with 210 myopic Chinese children aged 6 to 16 at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre in Guangzhou showed promising results in a sub-group of children aged between 6 and 12 years who had a history of parental myopia. The research indicated a 30% reduction in myopia progression in these children. This data indicates that myopia progression can be reduced over time. While results may vary for each child, this lens is easily adaptable for use.
Practicing good habits
Besides regular eye checks and getting their children fitted with the appropriate prescription lenses, parents need to take on the additional responsibility of educating their children on the importance of good eye practices. This will include teaching them the proper reading and writing postures, and advising them against engaging in near-work activities for a prolonged period of time. This means cutting down on computer games and taking rest breaks between periods of reading or writing. An active lifestyle, especially outdoor activities, should be encouraged as well.
