HFMD, Go Away! (Prevention and Care)

Mummy: “James, come and drink some water
James: (takes a sip) “Mummy, my mouth is painful!

The common symptoms of Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD) are blisters in the mouth, poor appetite, rashes, and fever.

hfmdIn this year alone, there have already been more than 4,000 cases of hand foot and mouth in children or Hand Foot Mouth Disease in Singapore (as of May 2011. Source : Ministry of Health).

As a community, we are responsible for the safety of our children. It is important to keep our environment clean and to teach children to be active warriors in fighting this disease.

2 simple steps to prevent contamination:

  • Use mild soap with warm water to clean toys and commonly used household items weekly
  • Use separate utensils during meals, and avoid sharing of food and drinks

2 hygiene practices to teach children:

  • When sneezing or coughing, use a tissue to cover our mouth and nose
  • Wash hands with soap at regular intervals - especially after using the toilet, and before meals

HFMD_mouth_thumbWhen our children are infected, we do our best to find ways and means to ease their pain. Of utmost importance is taking the prescribed medication from the doctor and drinking plenty of fluids.

Taking good care of our children can be a challenging task. We can help children to stay positive on their road to recovery.

Tips to motivate your children to fight dehydration:

  • Imagine the ulcers and rashes are “bad guys” who are afraid of water. Cheer your children on, and praise them for being brave and drowning the monster to make it go away
  • Provide alternative fluids such barley, or even vanilla ice cream (it’s milk-based!)

Fast Facts

The numbers of Hand Foot Mouth Disease HFMD cases have been at warning level since February, rising to epidemic levels at the end of June last year. The disease is caused by a group of more than 80 viruses. Some viruses (such as EV71) are more dangerous and can lead to brain damage. Depending on severity, the incubation period can range from a few days to 2 weeks.

MCYS and MOE are posing strict guidelines for the functioning of Childcares and Kindergartens. Children can only return to school upon receiving a certified letter from the doctor determining the child “fit for school.” If more than 16 cases, or 23% of the children are reported to be infected within 24 days, the law requires centres to be shut down for 10 days.

The Ministry of Health reported that while it is natural for Singapore to have periodic outbreaks of HFMD, early vigilance and action can help keep children safe from the disease. We encourage families to continue acting responsibly to guard our children from these diseases, towards building a healthy Singapore!

Singapore Dance Week 2011

singaporedanceweek_2011
Singapore Dance Week 2011 — Connect…Share…Experience!

A Celebration of Dance organised by the World Dance Alliance Singapore

The Creation and Presentation Network of WDA, Singapore (WDAS) is working towards celebrating Singapore Dance Week 2011. The weeklong celebration of Dance will open on May 21st 2011 with “Connect…Share…Experience!

As the name suggests, Singaporeans will get up and experience the joy and verve of Dance. The venue for this opening event will be One Fullerton. This will be followed by a full week of dance happenings in various parts of the island in schools, community centres, dance studios and institutions etc. Singapore Dance Week 2011 will close on May 28th 2011 at ION Orchard.

For us Singapore Dance Week is a platform for connecting, sharing and experiencing dance together. The seed of this idea first found expression as International Dance Day in 2008. Each year, the idea has been developing — in 2009 WDAS celebrated International Dance Week.

In 2010 the event morphed itself into Singapore Dance Week and was organised on a much larger scale than the previous years. This year, the event has received even more support from various segments of the community. We at WDAS look at Singapore Dance Week as an annual event which we see moving closer and closer each year towards the vision of taking Dance to the community.

We look forward to having you join us in celebrating Dance.

Join us during the opening on 21st May 2011 from 5pm to 6:30pm at One Fullerton for some fun dancing!!

Head Injuries In Children

doctor-makes-a-bandage-by-valeriy-lebedevIt is almost impossible to prevent children from ever being injured due to their constant activity. Fortunately most childhood falls or blows to the head result in injury to the scalp only.

Head injuries fall into two categories:
1. External – usually consist of scalp injuries
2. Internal – usually involves the skull, the blood vessels within the skull, or the brain.

What is a scalp injury?
The scalp is lined with blood vessels so it can easily bleed even with a minor cut. The “goose egg” that you see on your child’s head, that may appear after a head injury, is due to the leakage of blood or fluid into and under the scalp from the blood vessels. This may take days or even weeks to disappear. But not to worry, it is usually more frightening than threatening.

What is an internal injury?
An internal injury may involve a fracture of the skull, torn blood vessels or damage to the brain itself, which is potentially serious and life-threatening.

What should I do if my child falls?
Seek medical attention if your child is an infant, has a cut on his head and might need stitches, or shows any of the following symptoms:
1. Loss of consciousness
2. Vomiting more than twice
3. Neck pain or stiffness
4. Weakness
5. Speech or vision disturbance
6. Abnormal breathing
7. Bleeding or clear fluid discharge from nose or ear
8. Fits
9. Unequal pupil size

How can I take care of my child at home?If your child is not an infant, has not lost consciousness, is alert and behaving normally after the fall, apply ice or cold pack on the affected area for as long as the child allows, up to 15 minutes. Remember to use a washcloth or sock to wrap the ice so as to prevent frostbite from direct contact to bare skin.

If there is a scrape, wash it off with soap and water. Apply pressure with clean cloth to stop any bleeding if there is a cut, and then see the doctor as it might need stitches.

Only give clear fluids until your child has gone 2 hours without vomiting. Vomiting is common after head injuries but requires further evaluation if vomiting occurs more than twice. Observe your child for the next 24 hours for any signs of internal injuries. Seek medical attention immediately if any of the nine symptoms mentioned above is present.

Should I let my child sleep after he falls?
There is no need to keep a child awake after a head injury if you sense there is no abnormality. However you need to check in every few hours to look for twitching of limbs or disturbance in breathing or color. If you are not comfortable with your child’s appearance, arouse your child until he is completely awake and talking normally. If you cannot wake your child up, call the ambulance immediately.

My child is very active so, how do I prevent head injuries from happening?
Ensure that your home is child-proofed to prevent household accidents and that your child wears appropriate headgears while biking, in-line skating, skateboarding and playing contact sports. Wearing a bike helmet reduces risk of concussion by about 85%.
