Rosabel Yip, an early childhood educator shares her heartwarming story and joy of being a pre-school teacher. A job so noble and great!
Ever since I started teaching career, I realized that I have surprises every day from the children. That is the drive that makes me enjoy so much being with them.
Recently I have two new young children transferred to my class. I am stressed up coping with new and old children at the same time. I need to spend more time with the new children in order for them to catch up with the curriculum. However, I can’t ignore the old children to push them up to a new level. The transition period is really stressed and challenging. Despite curriculum, I am also challenged to normalize the new children in the area as soon as possible.
When we put in what we have for the children, we can see tremendous progress of development within the children themselves. They also learn to be responsible not only to themselves but also to the people around them. The most touching moments in my teaching would be seeing how the children show their care towards their teacher as well.
Do you agree that children are sensitive towards their surrounding?
I guess my expression showed that I am stressed or this little girl felt my tense, she came to sit beside me that day. I was guiding a child in her reading. Suddenly I felt someone hitting my shoulders and back softly. I turned to see who that was. She stopped as she was afraid that I might not like it. She quickly said, “I massage my mommy like this at home too!” I was so touched and grateful that she tried to give me a massage to help me feel good.
The intention is so heartwarming. Her action is so thoughtful.
The act might be little and simple but it is definitely powerful. Her little act has left footprint in my heart that many of us has forgotten to be nice to others due to our busy lifestyles. She reminds us that we need to be nice to the people around us. Be generous with our good intention and good act to bring joy to others. If every one of us is doing a little bit extra to each other, this world will be a better place to live. I am thankful to be able to spend time with children.

Encouraging young children to eat their greens can be a challenging task. Elaine shares her thoughts on getting kids to eat vegetables.
Young children in Singapore do not eat vegetables readily. I am beginning to feel that it might be a cultural issue in among Asians. Because of the way we cook and present the greens, it does not look as attractive as the yummy deep fried chicken wings, meat patties or steak.
Eating healthily is nevertheless very important. We know the goodness of eating vegetables but always face the problem of getting our own children to understand that. My son used to dislike vegetables and his eyes are so sharp that he can pick out the tiniest piece that he can find on his plate.
Hence, I began exploring different ways to get him to eat his greens. Here are some tips that worked for me getting kids to eat vegetables:
The bright, attractive colours of the vegetables turn unsightly when they are overcooked. DO NOT overcook the vegetables. If you do not cook it right, you might turn a nice piece of green vegetables into a yellowish dry-looking one. It does not look appetizing.
Disguise the vegetables. Be CREATIVE with your dish. Grate them and add them to pasta sauces or even stuff them into his favorite chicken fillet. In this way, the vegetables can be devoured without your child realizing it!
Make eating vegetables fun! Rather than forcing them and screaming at them to eat the vegetables, inject fun into the activity by introducing a game. You can use vegetables to create a smiley face on the plate. Use broccoli for hair, olive for eyes, corn kennels for other things within the plate.
Reward them. Reward them with some activities that they like or some of their favorite snack if they eat vegetables for dinner.
Eat lots of vegetables yourself. Your children look up to you as their role model. If you do not eat the greens, how can you expect him to eat them? Start by eating vegetables yourself. They will gradually be influenced.
Be Patient. Be patient and try different methods to get them to eat the vegetables. Forcing or coercing your child to eat his greens make lead to prolonged rejection.
Be Positive! Kids change very fast, sometimes even before we know it. The dislike for vegetables might be just a passing stage. The key is to keep encouraging them and do not give up!
Hope these tips can be of help to you getting kids to eat vegetables.

Pregnancy is a time for change in the body of the pregnant woman in order to accommodate the growing baby inside.
During pregnancy, hormone levels increase and the oral cavity is affected as well. The pregnant woman may experience bleeding and swelling of the gums. Moreover, food trapped in between the teeth can irritate the entire mouth.
Preventative dental work for pregnant women is safe and recommended because certain gum problems are linked to preterm birth.
There are times when the pregnant woman tends to neglect the condition of her teeth and gums which leads to more serious complications.
Here are some points to consider when thinking about dental work during pregnancy
You should inform your dentist that you are pregnant before going through dental procedures.
Crowns and cavity fillings reduce the chance of infection. Ideally, dental procedures could be done during the second trimester when the woman has taken some time to adapt to the changes brought by her condition. Physically, the term is perfect to lay in back position compared to the hassles during the third trimester.
Dentists advise the conduct of all dental interventions right after birth unless for emergency cases like tooth extraction and root canal procedures. Cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening should be postponed until after birth.
The amount of anesthesia for dental procedures should be reduced as much as possible. It is better to undergo some pain than to cause further risks from the substance to the baby. However, if the pain is extreme, you can opt for more numbing because the stress you feel through pain will also be felt by the baby.
Routine X-rays cause adverse effects to the development of the embryo. Procedures requiring the use of x-ray should be postponed, too, unless in unavoidable circumstances.
During dental examinations, the pregnant woman should be allowed to lay or sit in a comfortable position. Don’t sit with crossed legs to maintain healthy circulation.
Dental procedures may take some hours so for the pregnant woman to stay relaxed during the long time of being seated, she can bring with her pillows for comfort and headphones for entertainment
Take calcium-rich food sources in order to keep up with the calcium needs of the baby for bone development and to maintain your calcium needs as well.
The teeth and the gums are as important as other parts of the body especially during pregnancy. A happy disposition of the mother can be boosted by a healthy smile. Dental work during pregnancy should be given emphasis for a sunny journey to labor and birth.
