Colours Of Odyssey, ART From The Heart

Proceeds from exhibition to benefit children from Make-A-Wish Foundation

Art From The HeartThis June, more than 300 children, aged two to six years old, from Odyssey The Global Preschool are putting their hands together to create little masterpieces to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Foundation (Singapore). The children’s handiworks are truly from the heart, made with lots of love and enthusiasm.

We invite you to the launch of Colours of Odyssey, ART from the Heart at Odyssey Fourth Avenue, on 26 June at 10am. You will be joined by children, parents and teachers from Odyssey’s other preschool campuses at Wilkinson and Alexandra as well as members of the public. The exhibition will remain at Odyssey Fourth Avenue till June 29. It will then move to Odyssey at Wilkinson before its final stop at the Alexandra campus.

The public is invited to come to the exhibition and purchase these works of art to do their part for charity. However, children’s parents do get first priority to purchase their own child’s art work. Proceeds from exhibition sale will be donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation Singapore, we hope that you will support this annual community initiative by helping to publicise the event. Last year, through their collective efforts, the children at Odyssey raised $3,000 for the Singapore Children’s Society.

art-from-the-heart-3The theme for this year’s exhibition is nature. It will showcase the rich, vibrant and colourful experiences that the children have with nature. No doubt these works of art reflect the relationship the children have with nature, as felt and seen through their eyes.

Make-A-Wish Foundation will be putting up three art pieces for public bidding. These artworks have been lovingly created by children from the Foundation.

On 30th May 2010, CMA entered Singapore Books of Record! They hosted the largest abacus mental arithmetic competition in Singapore Expo.

540 students from as young as 5-year-old participated in this competition to compete for the honour.

The competition consists of:

1. Mental Arithmetic Competition: There are a total of three papers. For each paper, students have to complete as many mathematic sums as possible, within the given time frame of 1-minute.

2. Abacus Arithmetic Competition: There are a total of three papers. For the first two papers, students have to complete as many mathematic sums as possible, within the given time frame of 3-minutes. The final paper, students have to complete as many mathematic sums as possible, within the given time frame of only 30-seconds.

Understanding Why Children Need to Play

Why Children Need to PlayFor some parents, they could view play as often unhygienic, dangerous and detrimental to the health of the child as it exposes them to environmental hazards and unpredictable risks.

However, these parents should know that play has been incorporated to be an important part of the list for helpful activities in the development of a child. Parents should understand that play is always a part of life which is inherent from birth to adulthood.

If you think your child does not deserve a moment under the rain or a time with friends running under Mr. Sun, then think again! Below is a list of reasons why children need to play and engage in playful activities:

  • Play lets children discover new skills. When in a situation with playmates, the play alone could initiate the use of the sense and the physical attributes in order to get through a situation. Hide and seek for instance, would enhance the child’s ability to critically think of a hiding place that could not be easily thought of by the others.
  • The child developments negotiation skills during a playful engagement with others.
  • Physical development is boosted when a child gets into play. The act of running, walking and jumping is already a form of exercise that strengthens the muscles and the bones.
  • Play enhances appreciation of the world around. You child will be exposed to the beauty of nature as he runs through the green grass or feel the tickling raindrops unto his face.
  • A child’s play could permeate the imitation of roles which instills sense of responsibility. The child can act as a teacher, a fireman or a doctor. This vividly indicates the understanding of the child of the importance of other people around him.
  • A child’s play is a time to laugh with the others and laughter has always been considered the best medicine.
  • Play could instill experimentation and resourcefulness. Children could make use of the things around them and development their other functions aside from what these things have been intended to perform.
  • Peer-relationship is developed as children learn to respect others’ needs and wants.
  • Play enhances the child’s ability to face new challenges and skills. Chasing the butterflies or just picking out the best flower in the garden could help in boosting the ability of your child to deal with the world around him.

Allowing children to play is allowing their growth beyond your homes and the four walls of the classroom. It does not matter if your child goes home with a stained shirt sometimes. What matters is that the stain could be worth a life lesson and thousand meaningful learning experiences. So now that you have understood why children need to play, let them have some fun now.

Here are what some participants of our workshops have to say:

“The workshop gives me a better understanding of my 2 children, opens up my own mind to how my kids want me to ‘communicate’ with them, and even to manage my own marriage. With that, I have signed up for the Seminar where I hope to chicc-jay-joylearn more about the CHICC Profiling method and how to use the ‘tools’ to ‘know’ my children and my students, and to guide them along the way.”

~~ Ms Jamie Tan, Principal of Rainforest Education Centre, Mother of Son (aged 5) and Daughter (aged 3)

“I would recommend the workshop. Through the workshop, I discover not only more about my child but also my own potential and how I can enhance on my strengths. I have signed up for the Seminar so as to know more about my child as well as how my own career can proceed from here.”

~~ Ms Aw, Mother of Daughter (aged 5) and Son (aged 3)

“Had I learnt this UCM Profiling from its Founder, Master Bernard Yeo, earlier, I would have gained a deeper insight into my students’ psyche, and, could have helped most, if not all my students, ‘chart’ their life journey, thus avoiding the many pitfalls along the way and helping them reach their full potential. Nonetheless, it is still not too late……”

~~ Mrs Fobrogo, an Educator with more than 30 years of teaching experience

“As a curious mother, l was there to find out more about the workshop and the latest parenting trends. This workshop is not the usual parenting event but shares more about the profiling of your child. However, just knowing the character of your child is insufficient. We need to also know his strengths and weaknesses, and then help him work towards his personal success. However, no matter what we learn from the profiling result, we must always remember to treat our children equally and love them unconditionally. Overall, it was very interesting and beneficial, and I would recommend parents to attend the workshop.”

~~ Ms Lydia Sim, Mother of Daughter (aged 5)
