Baby At Work - Customizing Meaningful Attire For Your Kids and Yourselves

I have always wanted to customise sibling t-shirts for Ashton and Ashlyn but brushed the idea aside as the “word” customising seems an expensive thought.

However, I am glad that I have it done up recently with Baby At Work. Ashlyn loves the princesses, so I did a T-shirt with her name “Princess Ashlyn”.

As for Ashton, he is obviously our prince, so I chose picture of a knight with his name “Ashton”.

Ashton and Ashlyn were both excited to receive the customised t-shirts with their name sewn on them and proudly wore them to Little Neuro Tree immediately on Sunday.

customised t-shirtsBaby At Work is a very user friendly platform. Very clear instructions were given on how to customize apparel on a step by step basis. They have quite a wide range of badges to choose from

I played around with a few designs before deciding on the one that I have chosen. They have a good range of designs too. Round collar t-shirts being one of the basics, they have polo-shirts, as well as long sleeved t-shirts for the boys. As for the girls, they have ruffle sleeved t-shirts (my personal favourite) and sundresses. You can even purchase the ballerina “tu-tu” to go with the t-shirts that you have customized for your daughter.

What do I like about Baby-At-Work?

1. The customer service is great! I customized a ruffle-sleeved t-shirt for Ashlyn but realized that it is only meant for kids from 18 to 24 months old. I was worried that it would not fit Ashlyn and emailed them to enquire.

customized t-shirts

They then sent me the size chart that I have overlooked again and ensured me that it is alright to change to another design as long as my order is not processed yet. Apart from that, they offered to refund me the remaining amount if the replacement piece of apparel of my choice has a lower value. In the end, I stucked to my choice as the ruffle-sleeved t-shirt that I have chosen suited petite, little Ashlyn very nicely.

2. The quality of the t-shirts are good (100% cotton). The material is soft and comfortable for the kids. The prices are reasonable and yet the quality is not being compromised.

3. Turnaround time is fantastic. I received my customised t-shirts less that a week upon purchase. What can be improved at Baby-At-Work? The colour selection is limited for certain categories, especially the kids’ category. They stock common designs like round neck tees, long sleeves, sundress and ruffle t-shirts. The primary colours that they have are mainly white and for some girlish designs, they have another variation of pink.

My main concern on choosing a white t-shirt is that children will get the clothing dirty easily, but on the other hand, I love them to be dressed in white. A colour that’s so innocent and bright!

Monkey Math | Learning Numbers for Children

Monkey Math

The Fun Way to Learn Simple Addition!

Age: 4 +
This learning maths game by ‘Learning Mates’ has a total of 16 pieces. There is a little monkey that is on a stand and his head rocks back and forth depending on what numbers are placed on each handle that he is holding. He is 7 .25 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide. Plus there are 15 “banana bunches” or number tokens. Of these 15, there are 2 of each of numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 1 of each of numbers: 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Also included is an instruction booklet showing how to make learning simple addition a whole banana bunch of fun!

When the monkey is not balanced with equal numbers on either hand, the side with the greater number hangs down low and the other hand will be up. While his hand hangs low, his eyes are wild looking (crossed) since the eye sockets are not lining up with his eyes. That means it’s time to try again. When he’s balanced, you can see his eyes are looking straight at you.

When a number is placed on the right hand, you have to balance the bananas by putting the equal “number” of bananas /tokens on the other hand. For example, if you put a single bunch of 10 bananas on the right hand, you will have to put 2 or 3 of the other numbers together to get the total on the left hand up to 10 bananas. E.g. to make 10 – you can put 8 and 2 or 7 and 3 or 5, 4 and 1 etc. When you do have equal numbers showing, the monkey’s arms are balanced and you can see his eyes looking straight at you.

learning maths

This helps children start learning about numbers and how they add up to other numbers. It helps teach about balance on a scale and helps them begin to grasp beginning math concepts in a FUN way. This game also introduces number recognition, sorting and counting.

How to make maximum use of ‘Monkey Math’!!!

1. For younger children you can start with using the banana bunches that are in pairs. Numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5 can be used to pair with each other or match together for number recognition.
Get your child to find the same numbers and pair them.

2. The banana bunches can also be used to reinforce number recognition.

a. You can call out a number and your child can pick the number up for you.

b. You can show the number to your child and your child says the number name to you.

3. Your child can use the banana bunches to arrange the numbers in sequence from 1 -10.

a. Can be used to arrange numbers from the smallest to biggest
b. Or biggest to smallest.

This gives a better visual perception as the child is able to see the numbers of bananas increasing or decreasing in quantity as he lays the bananas.

4. To begin using the Monkey balance use the banana bunches that are in pairs first so your child just hangs the exact same pair to balance the monkey’s arms before moving on to other number combinations.

What Should We Do with Our Boy Who Throws Tantrums All The Time?

Question on Toddler Tantrums:

My elder boy is coming to 21 months old. He likes to throw or mess up things, cry, scream or beat us after he is tired of playing. He also gets angry when we say NO. It’s not only happening at home, but also in the public. We explained to him and even tried to punish him by facing the wall but things are still the same. What should we do?

Answers:

Priya: What your little one is having is the typical case of toddler tantrums, which is common as he reaches 24 mths, or rather the “Terrible Two” phase. A little backtrack is needed here. When was the first time he did such a thing? And how did you react? I know of parents who have laughed at and teased the child when he did it the first time; and then started getting annoyed when he repeated his actions as days went by.

At your son’s age, kids love reactions, so he does get a bit violent because he wants to see your reaction. If you had shown an unfavourable reaction when he first did that, chances are, he would not have repeated them; or maybe you would have shown disagreement with his behaviour, but what if others e.g. grandparents or aunties and uncles have not?

The little boy will start to wonder why it was okay the first time and not now; or why grandma and grandpa are okay about it, but not mum and dad. As a very young child, such thoughts can further stress a child up. So that may be the reason for his repeated violent behavior.

toddler tantrums

Time-outs are okay but make sure they do not go further than 1.5 minutes. The next time he does that, e.g throws a toy, pack up all his toys and no matter how hard he tries, do not give it to him. If he hits you, ignore him. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Each and everytime he gets violent and you keep giving in, he thinks that’s the way to get things done his way.

Alternatively, you parents can stage up a little act everyday to show him how to behave. For e.g, Mummy passes Daddy a towel and Daddy says “Thank you”; and Mummy accidentally throws a cup on the ground and when Daddy ‘disciplines’ Mummy, Mummy says “Sorry”!

All these may sound and look very melodramatic but you will be surprised at the effect it has on your child, who is at an age where the brain is like a sponge and easily absorbs everything he hears or says.

toddler tantrums

Little Neuro Tree: When you adopt a certain way of punishing a child and the behaviour remains, it is telling you that the punishment does not work. Try positive discipline where expectations are communicated to the child and achievable goals are set to help mould the child’s behaviour in the right direction.

Model the correct behaviour. For example, keeping the toys together after the child is tired of playing and as you are keeping the toys, you can sing Barney’s “Clean Up” song. Teach your child to communicate what he’s angry about instead of hitting someone. Provide alternatives and choices, instead of just saying “No” to his demands or work towards a compromise.

Remember to shower lots of praises for good behaviours. Celebrate little successes and make the child feel good. I’m sure your child seeks your love and approval. You need to guide him in the right direction. Sometimes, ignoring bad behaviour may help but make sure that you are watching him to ensure safety. He could also be acting up because he has to share your attention with the younger sibling. Make sure you spend some time with him and include him and also help him to bond with the younger sibling by doing things together.

Colour of the Sun | Stories About Motherhood

Children view the world differently from how adults do. Sometimes, they look into things beyond the physical aspects, or sometimes they view the physical façade in such a way adults never imagined. Moreover, everything has its own time for every child – a time to learn, a time to realize.

One day, my friend was doing the usual stuff that a teacher needs to do, including checking of assignments, reports and projects and computing the grades. When the grading season comes, my friend usually forgets that she is a mother because she gets hooked on to the computer without even noticing people around. While doing some of these stuff, she directed her son face to face with a piece of paper, a pencil and coloring materials hoping that would make him behave for the moment. And certainly, the son stayed put for sometime.

He was scribbling and drawing figures after figures when he stood and took out some crayons. He grabbed the yellow and began coloring the image with it. My friend paused out of her work and tried to help her son out. He pointed into the image with a circle and some ray-like structures. The son pointed on the image and proudly announced, “I will color this yellow!” My friend hurriedly said, “No, son, it should be red,” thinking of the fruit they munched out last night. The son insisted in disagreement, “Mama, yellow is the color of the sun!
rambutan

This story happened a year ago. Yesterday, I had the chance to join the two in watching television while eating the rambutan fruit. My friend remembered the drawing which her son did. She took it out and pointed to that image in yellow color. She then asked her son what the image was. Hali, now three-year old and grinning, answered, “Rambutan.” The two of them looked at each other and burst into laughter.

Benefits of Teaching Your Baby Reading

Baby Read

You must have heard the phrase ‘children are like sponges’, well babies are too. In fact, the learning rate of babies is the fastest it will ever be. Just think of how much a baby learns in it’s first year without any assistance from adults. A baby learns to eat solids, crawl and then take her first steps.

Your baby learns to interpret signals, expressions and also language in her first year. She knows the difference between words and other noises. She may learn to verbalise a few simple words, but can communicate a long time before she can actually talk, through signals, movement and noises. Baby can also learn to read.

There are products on the market that assist you in teaching your baby to read from the age of four months old through large colourful flash cards, sound effects and videos. If the programme is started when the baby is between 4 and 7 months old, then by the age of one year, babies have the capacity to read the alphabet. In another six months they can read whole words and after another six months, whole sentences can be read.

But what are the benefits of starting so young? Is it necessary to begin at such an early age, as all children learn to read eventually anyway? There definitely are benefits of starting to teach your baby to read early, if the lessons are done in an engaging, fun and unpressured way. Here are some of the benefits:

Easiest time for learning The infant years are the time of greatest learning capacity. Languages are absorbed at a phenomenal rate, but this learning curve decreases at around 5 or 6 years of age. It makes sense to tap into this precious time and enhance baby’s brain development.

A head start at school If a child already has the fundamentals of reading under his belt by the time he starts formal school, he will have much more time to focus on developing other skills. Children who learn to read as babies enjoy the learning process and look forward to school as they are not held back by the chore of learning to read.

Greater self-confidence and social interaction Learning how to read as babies gives children a self-esteem boost as they can see their achievements at school and take pleasure in them. They are also emotionally stable as they have more time to forge emotional bonds with peers and enjoy playtime.

Bonding time for baby and parents Spending a few minutes every day in a focused way with your baby is a great way to increase the bond between the two of you. As you see your baby loving the stimulation and actually learning from the lessons, it will give you a wonderful feeling of achievement and a sense that you are doing something positive together.

Here is a video showing Felicity, a one year old baby, reading whole words. It is evident that she is enjoying herself and there is no pressure to finish the few minutes of words. It is truly amazing to watch such a small child understanding what she is reading.

My Girl Keeps Pulling Her Hair!

Question : I have some child behavior problems. My girl is 21 months old and she keeps pulling her hair out almost everyday. What can i do to help her not to pull anymore?

child behavioral problems

Answer: It is important to find out the reason or trigger of her behaviour. For example, does it happen whenever she does not get what she wants? Are there times when she does not engage in that behaviour? Sometimes children may engage in certain behaviours to get the attention from their parents or caregivers.

If that is the case, remember to shower lots of attention and praise for good behaviours i.e. when she is not pulling her hair. It is also important that you are very specific in your praise, for example, tell the child, “Good Job for not pulling your hair” and give the child a hug. Try to ignore bad behaviour or ask the child if it is painful.

When you only give attention for bad behaviours, you are actually rewarding that behaviour. On the other hand, it is very important that parents check to make sure that it is not due to some sensory issues that the child is experiencing. Young children are not very good at telling their parents how they are feeling. Take your child to a paediatrician for a check if necessary.
