Ladybird Books Mini Series for Older Kids
Here’s a few favourites of my 3.5 years old son, which you may want to explore for your older kids who are pre-schooler and above.
1. Mad About Dinosaurs: This is a all time favourite for boys who are crazy about dinosaurs just like my son. As a 3.5 years old, the words in the book might be difficult for him to understand however, it thrills him to see so many different types of dinosaurs within the book.
The book provides concise and fascinating facts that the boys are interested to learn and explore.
It is a great first book about DINOSAURS if you are thinking of getting one for your son.
2. Five Minute Tales - Messiest Monster Ever: Like it’s
name suggest, “Five Minute Tales”, you will get to find 3 short and entertaining monster stories within the book.
We love this book when we have only limited time to sit down for a read. The kids can choose one of the three stories that they want to read and we zoom straight into it.
If monster is not a favourite of your kid, we can try out other titles like ” Bravest Princess Ever”, “Fastest Pony Ever” or Busiest Pirate Ever”.
I believe it will serve as perfect entertainment even for kids in the lower primary.
3. Lewis Lion Learns to Roar: I love the graphics inside the book. This book is about the journey of little Lewis Lion learning to become a big and grown up lion. On the journey of learning, he comes up with lots of objections.
He doesn’t want to grow up. He only loves to sleeps and snores under the sun. One night,is nose began to twitch and he was awaken by the rustling nearby. He suddenly remembers his big lion lessons and start to apply them.
After reading the story to the kids, I suddenly realised that our children takes time to mature and grow. Just like Lewis, one fine day, they will surprise us by applying the skills that we have been teaching them even though they might be reluctant initially. An entertaining book, not only for the children but for myself as well.

Tips on How to Potty Train the Most Stubborn Child
Potty training for toddlers is an extremely important part of their training. Some children are very stubborn and may tax their parents. Boys usually take more time to become toilet trained then girls.
Children like to follow adult kids, so if they see toilet trained big kids, they will try to follow toilet etiquette. Adequate toilet training will help not only your children, when they grow older. They may have to spend lot of time at home when you are at work, so proper toilet training will keep them clean.
Children take long time to get potty trained, so do not expect quick results. It may be months before they open up to you and start learning the process.
If your children are stubborn and refuse to follow rules, here are some potty training tips on how to start potty train your child

- Tip One: Children fear the entire potty process. If you sit with them and discuss all details, alleviate their concerns about sitting on toilet, they will be more inclined to follow potty rules. If your child has siblings, help him / her watch elder siblings, so that he/she knows it’s safe. Once your child sees that other kids have tackled their fears, there is some motivation for them. Talk about flushing to clear any doubt in your children’s mind.
- Tip Two: At times constipation, urinary tract infection may also make your children fearful of potty and they may not take to training nicely. You need to take your children to a physician for examination. Children can’t always explain their physical complaints very well, so a medical examination may be necessary. Once children are treated using medicines, they may respond very well to potty training.
- Tip Three: You should not start potty training for toddlers before 18 months of age. When your kids are from 18 months to 3 years of age, they are most ready to tackle potty training. Younger children may have more difficulties.
- Tip Four: At times children see potty training as removal of their freedom. They resent it as they can’t be free anymore. You can give them freedom by allowing them to choose their own underwear. They will be more then happy to throw their diapers if they get this freedom.
- Tip Five: Sometimes, children just do not want to do anything, you try and tell them to. So when you introduce a change in their potty schedule/ process, use subtle ways. You can passively try and train them, rather then actively pursuing potty training.
If you observe that your kids are stubborn about the entire toilet training process, try to investigate the reasons. It may be a medical reason, or some fear in your children’s mind. When you talk to your children about it, they will open up and voice their concerns. This will help you on how to start potty train even the most stubborn children.

Review on Ladybird Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Ladybird books are my all time classics. I read it when I was a child and now my children still enjoy reading them. Recently, we picked up a few books for toddlers from Ladybird and here’s a few titles that my children love to read.
My Best Book about The Sea: This book is easy to read and it can be read to toddlers as young as going 2 years old. I like this book because it encourages alot of interaction between the parents and the kids. There are simple questions prompted at which page to help the toddler think. My kids love the page with a simple maze when the book prompt them to help baby whale swim through the ocean to find mummy whale. They will use their fingers to trace the path again and again.
Talking about the pictures of the sea helps the children build their early learning skills such as observation skills, language skills and imagination.

What is the Time? : It is a good book to get when the kids are learning how to tell the time. It is a very simple book indicating the routine from waking up to night time and what was being done throughout the day for everyone. At the end of the book, days of the week were introduced and I like the suggestion that the book give to help the kids remember the sequence of the days of the week.
What I like about Ladybird Mini-series books? : It is economically and very easily affordable at less than S$5 per book. It is also small and handy, making it easy for the kids to bring with them during traveling. My children likes to bring them along to read while we wait for a meal at the restaurant. My son particularly loves to bring along the book Mad About Dinosaur, which I will talk about it in my next book write-up.
What I do not like about Ladybird Mini-series books?: On a contary to being small and handy, it is not as damage resistant as a huge board book that many parents love to buy for their toddlers. The wordings might also be too small to capture the toddler’s attention but the books are definitely perfect for story telling and reading for toddlers together, which is a good activity for parent-child bonding.
