Spoiled Kid: How to Avoid Raising One

Spoiled kids are usually easy to detect in almost any situation. Basically, spoiling happens when the child is in control and the parent is not.

This happens when what rules are the child’s desires and not the parents’. Sometimes, you tend to evaluate yourself in some conditions to know if you are already spoiling a child.

Any parent can spoil a child in some cases. This is because we sometimes confuse love against discipline. Here are some ways on how a parent can avoid raising problems kids:

  • Do not confuse love against happiness - Most parents think that making their kids happy by giving them what they want is a way to show how much they love them. This could be dangerous because children will be used to pushing for anything they desire to the extent of going against house rules and discipline policies. This also happens when we allow our children to do things which make them happy like watching television even during wee hours.
  • Allow children to feel frustration and shame - Parents are not even happier to see their children fail. Spoiling a kid happens when we don’t want them to feel failure that we end up giving everything they want.
  • Spoiled Kids

  • Let a kid deal with outburst - Parents usually fear that the child may give in to over-pouring of emotion. Their desire to stop their children from crying and screaming triggers spoiling.
  • Set Limits - Set house rules which you children should strictly adhere to. Children push because you don’t push and stand firm for the limitations you set.
  • Be consistent - As parents, you must bear in mind that you will never allow rules to be bent. Make a standardized limitation for your children especially if they belong to almost the same age brackets. If you did not allow your eldest to play during mealtime, you should not even say yes to your youngest to do the same. Universality is a must.
  • Instill values beyond materialism - Giving your child all the material possessions they want would cause them to want more. Let them learn contentment and satisfaction instead of desiring for material possessions. Envy is the root of desires. When a child argues how his or her playmates are given all the best toys in town, explain to them that different families have different rules.

Spoiling children is easier than keeping them grounded. However, as parents, learn to set limits for yourself and your kids so you can bid goodbye to spoiling days without hassles.

Do you have problems kids? How do you handle them? Mothers, we like to hear from you on how you balance love and discipline.

Enjoying Your Baby Moon

A pregnant woman may not welcome the idea of going on a travel because of the hassles entailed with her pregnancy. Oftentimes, she would rather stay home and get slumped with depression and low self-esteem over her unpleasant condition.

But daily routine may not be very healthy for the expectant mother, father and the baby inside. Preparing for the coming of the baby is also preparing for your becoming parents. Celebrate this moment and cap your being a couple alone by indulging in the luxury of a romantic getaway.

Baby moon is your time together to gear yourselves with patience, love and nurture to stand for each other to build a family for the coming baby. This precious time can be enjoyed more if you know what you should or should not do during baby moons.

Dos and Don’ts during Baby Moon

  • Do visit a doctor to see to it that you and your baby are in good physical condition. Your doctor may have good reasons to tell you not to go. Especially so if you are in a high risk state. You wouldn’t want to miss what good things your doctor can share about traveling.
  • Babymoon Travel

  • Do bring extra pillows and lots of water. Preterm labor is usually caused by dehydration. Travelers are prone to dehydration. Take some little sips once in a while as you go along your way to excitement.
  • Do make considerable pit stops. Pregnant women require more time for the comfort room. Moreover, stops will help you stretch your legs and back.
  • Don’t opt for long travels. Baby moons are for you to enjoy. A trip which runs more than six hours is no longer fun.
  • Don’t forget to include in your baggage the contact information of the nearest hospital along with your doctor’s details.
  • Do check the airlines regarding any restrictions or special policies with pregnant passengers. Some airlines need to have a copy of your doctor’s permission to travel.

By following these tips, you surely will enjoy your baby moon romantic getaway. Find some time to divert your attention to your partner and seek the best reasons for you to look forward to building a family back home.

Time’s Up | A Time to Reflect

True Motherhood Stories

Old WomanOne day, my sixty five year old mother came to me while I was preparing myself for work. She sat on one of the benches in front of the pad I am renting while I was heading for the door. As usual, she was wearing those fancy tops that a woman in her sixties wouldn’t mind wearing. She was in her best made up face, her everyday façade, beautiful and unfading.

Mama began to talk and asked me if I heard of our neighbor who will undergo surgery because her two toenails will be removed due to gangrene. I said I have no time gossiping about neighbors and their misfortune. I am in a hurry and I said irately, “Ma, you shouldn’t waste your time talking about our neighbors. You are sixty five and you should learn to mind your own life.” She smiled and replied, “You are always the woman I expect you to become… independent and straight.”

Trying to end up the conversation because I am sure it will eat up my time and I will be late for work, I asked her where she’s going and why she was dressed well. She turned her face towards the neighbor’s door and said, “I am going to visit her.” I gave my face a finish and stood up to leave as I replied, “Ma, there are more significant things than gossiping. Why don’t you just go to work and do better things than talk about people who are not affecting you anyway?” I turned my back irritated, pulled my bag and put on my shoes.

Mama went on saying, “She was my classmate in primary school. She used to be bubbly and fun. We usually talk in the afternoons and now, she can’t walk anymore because the gangrene has covered her entire legs and the toes are just initial impairments. She’s expected not to be able to walk anymore in days.”

I looked at Mama and her eyes began to reveal shadows of fear and sorrow. The feel of losing her is imminent as she turned her back and bid goodbye. The fear of leaving is beaming from her heart. In time, I know, I will no longer see my mother walk with beauty and life. She said I should take care of myself and I nodded.

As Mama headed to the pathway, I felt a string of regret and shame just right in my face. How many times have I asked my mother if she is alright? How many times have I gone to her side to extend comfort and love?

Mama’s old but her spirit is vibrant and strong. As she walked away, I realized that I should not wait for her to lose her toes before showing how much I love her. Seeing her vanish into the horizon, I whispered words she longed to hear and begged for the morning breeze to bring them right straight to her ears.

Time for us to pause and spend some quality time before its too late. Do you have interesting motherhood stories to share? Write to us at mailbox@todaysmotherhood.com and get your story posted on Today’s Motherhood.

Rich Son Poor Son

3 old parents were proud of their children’s careers. However, these children did not have time for their parents. “They were very busy” each said. The last woman did not talk much of her son. Her son was not a high flyer like the others. But her son has time for his mother. The other 3 women were in awe. They would prefer that their children spend time with them.

What kind of children do you want to have in future? Give us your comments.
