My Son Can’t Focus When Doing His Work

Question:

My son is three and half yrs old and I sometimes find it difficult to make his concentration focus when doing his work.

He has no problems keeping still while watching an hour long cartoon or playing toys but he gets distracted easily whenever he has to sit and complete a piece of work.

I started using the reward system, a simple snack or game, if he finishes his work. But he continues to be distracted.

Every session is no more than 30 minutes of flashcards, writing, colouring, sticker fun, maths, phonics etc…there is always a variety designed into the program each day.

Friends tell me that based on their experience; I have to do something now as children will not grow out of this behaviour if not corrected when they are young.

Answer:

Make learning fun for your child. Parents know best the kinds of things that appeal to their children. For example, if it is toy cars that they like, we could do colouring activities on cars, counting toy cars, playing games with car themes, etc.

It also helps to create some novelty on the things that you do with your child. For example it could be doing some of the activities out of the house.

You may also plan a time in the day that your child will be most ready to learn without any distractions from TV programmes or people around him.

Set little goals that your child can achieve and celebrate little successes. Consider adding some physical activities to help your child develop his gross motor skills too. Exercising also helps the child to concentrate and focus better.

Tips For Planning A Baby Moon Travel

Soon to be parents should take some time away to spend their last moments together as the start of the family they are starting to build.

Baby Moon Travel are another way of welcoming another phase of their lives as parents to their coming baby.

It highlights the last few moments of them being just two because in the months ahead, somebody else will come between them to spice up the relationship - a baby. (more…)

Getting Pregnant Again

Getting pregnant is the most thrilling part of a woman’s life. Having a baby again may be as exciting as the first pregnancy but that does not mean that the pregnant woman will no longer get through the same pains and hassles of pregnancy.

Pregnancy changes from one child to another as their needs and wants differ. The ease and comfort of pregnancy depends on the woman’s ability to take care of herself and to deal with body changes.

The possibility of having a baby for the second time decreases especially to those who have started having a family at ages when fertility declines. Experts have suggested ways on how to grab a higher chance of getting pregnant again:

Ways to Increase your Chances of Getting Pregnant:

Undergo Tests - Women 35 years and older should see to it that they undergo tests that measure the hormones to rev up your system for ovulation. Pap smear and blood test will help gauge your chances for having a baby again.

Prenatal Supplements and Vitamins - Fertility rate is boosted by folic acid and iron. Some regular multivitamins may not be enough that food supplements should be taken in.

Know when to Zero in - The eggs are kept fertile for just 12 hours in each month, this means rare chances of ovulation happens that is why couples need to have an ovulation predictor kit o their own to know when a fertile period is. This period is indeed the best time for couples to engage in sex.
Getting Pregnant
Have some time to relax - The lack of relaxation can cause rapid production of stress hormone called cortisol which hinders ovulation and directs the woman to low fertility rate. Never engage in activities which force you to exert too much effort. Spend your weekends in some recreational activities like walking and strolling in parks. Find magic in talks as the innermost unsaid feelings will be expressed. This is therapeutic in some way as talking relieves you of any emotional or psychological burdens.

Conditioning - Conditioning your mindset and your physical status is a good way to prepare for your next pregnancy. The use of Vitamin C supplements and antihistamines can lead to drying of cervical secretions. Avoiding these substances will help the sperm escort the egg through smoothly. Some couples may opt for use of lubricants however; the setback with this is that the substance tends to block the passage of the sperm. Moisturizers especially created for the cervix last longer than these lubricants.

Try Acupuncture - Acupuncture is safe. Many women have testified benefiting from this therapeutic acupuncture regarding conception, increased blood flow, and even stimulation of hormones. There is no harm in trying as this treatment has been proven safe for centuries.

How to get pregnant again entails a lot of effort especially so if the woman has reached the delicate age. Whatever activity it is that you engage in, you need to seek the permission and advice of your doctor or health care provider.

My Girl Falls Asleep in School!

Question:

I have a five-year-old who always wakes up at the same time as when her older 2 siblings are getting ready to go to school.

She sleeps in a different room and I’ve done everything to block out the noise and light including trying to get her to go back to sleep but nothing seems to work. As a result, she sometimes falls asleep in her kindergarten which runs from noon till about 4.30pm.

She sleeps at about 8.30pm every night. If she goes to bed anytime earlier, she’ll end up waking up at night. I am trying to wean her off afternoon nap. What can I do to rectify this problem?
Girl Sleeping - photo by blank66

Answer:

The routine of sleeping early and waking up early has probably been established in your child. You also mentioned that she takes daytime naps. It seems that your child is getting plenty of sleep. Is it possible to engage her in some activities other than sleeping during the day? Or maybe you might want to put her to sleep just a little later around 9 to 9.30 pm and see if that can help her to get up later.

The best time to change that routine would be during the weekends or school holidays where the siblings do not need to get up that early.

Anytime when your child wakes up at an inappropriate time, do not have toys where she has easy access and do not to give attention to her but pretend to continue sleeping. Your child will get bored eventually and the time it takes for her to go back to sleeping will get shorter and shorter.

It is a concern if your child is sleeping in class as she will be missing out on her lessons. You need to try out some of these strategies immediately.

Review of Peek-A-Boo!

Peek-a-Boo-Playground

Children in Singapore are spoilt for choice when it comes to indoor play centres. In the last couple of years they have cropped up in most areas of Singapore, providing a well needed place for kids to play in our urban jungle. It makes total sense to enjoy these air conditioned play areas when it is scorching outside and the sun is too dangerous to play under.

Leisure Park Kallang is a great spot to enjoy some indoor entertainment, from cinema, bowling, ice skating and of course eating! The latest addition is Peek-A-Boo! Formerly Bambini Play Club. This is a very friendly centre, catering to children under 12 years, although most popular with children ages between 2 and 5 years.

peek-a-boo logoPeek-A-Boo! is not a huge centre, in fact it is quite compact compared to others, but this works to its’ advantage as the staff are able to keep a watchful eye on all the children. Because of this they allow parents to leave their children at the centre while they go shopping, visit the spa next door or even see a film!

This is ideal for busy parents and also for the children who would rather play here than tag along with mum. There is plenty to keep the little ones busy. Four levels of tunnels, suspension bridges, a trampoline, a spiral slide and great ball pit. There are small toddler swings and a little play house right up the top where kids make it their personal mission to bring as many balls as possible.

Peek-A-Boo! also provides colouring pencils and paper free of charge or the children can try their hand at rubber art for a small fee. There is a cafe with plenty of seating for kids to have a snack or a pizza and free Wi-Fi access for parents. Children are well looked after here and every effort is made to make them feel welcome and at home.

Party packages are also available from SG$450 and are fully hosted and catered for with party food, decorations and balloons.

Opening Hours:
10am-8.30pm, Monday to Sunday

Entrance fees for unlimited play:

  • <6months: free
  • 6 months-2 years: SG$8
  • Above 2 years: SG$12
  • Adults free

Membership packages: 20 sessions for SG$210 (above 2 years) or SG$140 (under 2years). Members will receive 5% off party packages and cafe items.
