Interview with Jess Loh (Founder Rent D Toyz)
1. Hi Jess, what inspired you to set up Rent D Toyz?
As a parent myself, I feel that toys nowadays are getting more costly and my children often get bored with a toy very fast. Therefore, what shall I do with those toys that my children are bored with. Selling all the toys can be quite a hassle. Renting them will be more beneficial to parents and at the same time it can help to generate some income for myself.
2. What are the challenges that you faced during the business since most Singapore parents prefers to buy new toys rather than renting them?
Rental price must be reasonable & competitive. Let them know the advantages of renting toys rather than buying them. More variety of toys, less storage place in their house.
3. Describe a typical day running Rent D Toyz?
Administration work like checking & replying of emails, building my network, preparation of toys (cleaning,checking, etc), looking through competitor’s website as well as distributor’s website to see what is new.
4. How does your client collect the toys from you?
Either by self collection or delivery (order above $35)
5. Is there any particular kind of toys that Rent D Toyz specialize in?
We concentrate on providing a range of toys rather than specialize in one. But we do look into toys that are unique and interest children.
6. What are the top 3 most popular toys within your store?
Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo, Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Table and Step 2 Fire Engine
7. I like the idea of toy rental for birthday bash. Can you tell us more in detail about that?
We have a few toys that are particularly for party fun (bigger). These toys are suitable for group play as more children can play at the same time. Interested parties can fill in the form with their details and we will package the toys suitable for their little guest’s age group. 
Usually we need abt 3-5 days to customize the party bash items for them. Currently, we have 2 different price package $80 & $100. Delivery & assembly charges will be included in the package. Rental period will only be few hours (max 6 hrs)
8. As a mum, our top priority and concern when renting a toy will be the cleanliness and hygiene since it is being share by other children. What do you do to address this concern?
We use Sureclean products to clean up our toys before renting out and after collection. Sureclean products are widely used by toys rental companies (our competitors) and it has US patent cert to prove that it helps to prevent Hand Foot Mouth diseases (HFMD).
9. How will you handle if the toys returned were damaged?
If any parts of the toy rented out has missing parts, but still in rentable state (determine by RentDToyz), a fee of 1 month’s rental is chargeable. If the toy is damaged by the hirer, the retail price stated in the website will be borne by hirer.
10. What sets you different from other toy rental businesses currently in the market?
We are a home-based online biz as compared to commercial toy rental companies. We emphasize on personal touch (e.g.customize party bash), fast response rate and flexibility to stand out from others.
