Importance of Teaching Phonics For Children

120x90_b

Phonics is a method use to teach our children English. Phonics lesson for children involves teaching how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters. Children typically start reading with the aid of phonics at the age of 5 or 6 years old.

Phonics is a set of rules that children should remember and apply when forming new words. My son, Ashton has got quite a good foundation in English and I have to credit his school, Growing Up Gifted GUG, for their constant drilling of phonics since his toddler class. That is how he got to know phonics at the back of his hands.

I am a strong believer of learning phonics for children. With the simple rules of Phonics lesson in mind, it aids the children in the following aspects:

  1. Makes Reading Easier
Phonics builds a basic foundation when teaching the children how to read. Children start understanding sounds naturally when they learn to speak. Phonics teaches them how to break down words through sounds. By being able to break down the words, they are able to recognize words easier and thus enhance their reading ability even with unknown words in future reading.
  2. Makes Learning Spelling Easier
Mastering Phonics will enable children to blend words and at the same time teaches them how to dissect certain words. By being able to break down the words, they will be able to learn how to spell certain words easier.
  3. More Accurate Pronunciation
By perfecting the actual 44 speech sound of the 26 alphabets, the children will be able to pronounce better when they converse in English.
  4. Other Subjects using English
Don’t forgetting that English is the first language for schools in Singapore. Many other important subjects such as Mathematics and Science are being taught in English. By building a good foundation in the language, it will certain aids the child in school activities down the road.

Mastering Phonics for your children will give them an edge over others in school and reduce the stress of not being able to catch up with English related subjects.

Once Upon a Potty Video

This is a story about Joshua, a little boy, who was learning how to potty. It was absolutely hilarious.

I love how they repeat the words “Weewee” and “Poopoo”. I almost died laughing when I saw him bend over and show us his “little hole for making poopoo”! This is great stuff!

Good video to get you started on potty train your child.

Phonics Alphabet ABC Song

Phonics means teaching the sounds of English rather than the letter names. It’s the fastest way for students to learn how to read, whether in the US or UK (where it is now in the national curriculum).

This song is intended to be used as a review for children who have already done some phonics.

The idea of phonics is that instead of “ay”, “bee”, “see”, you learn the sounds and then the letters that they correspond to. The idea being that this makes reading a whole lot easier.

Hence this song, which is a version of the abc song but using the sounds rather than names of the letters.

Party Toys Review

little-tikes-obstacle-play-centerParty Toys Review

1. Little Tikes Obstacle Play Center

Since RentDToyz was borned on 22 Feb 09, I have been actively searching for new ideas on what nowadays parents want for their children. I found out that parents would love to give their children an unforgettable birthday party, especially their 1st year birthday.

I did my research on the toy’s types, age suitability, quality, brands, functions and safety issues before choosing the toys that I would like to rent out. Thereafter, I introduced toys specially, for parties recently in June 09.

In this party toys review, I would like to share these two toys which I personally love to see in my children’s party. Hopefully, my sharing will be useful to parents who have in mind to throw a party for your child.

This large obstacle course provides non-stop fun for multiple children! You don’t have to worry about this toy being only to entertain one child. More children can join in the fun of throwing of balls and sliding.

The course is made with heavy duty vinyl material for long lasting fun. A total of 50 soft, air-filled balls designed for safe play are included. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

little-tikes-foldaway-playground2. Little Tikes Foldaway Playground

This is a unique design of a toy that unfolds into an instant mini-playground!

The features include climbing wall, slide and an adjustable basketball hoop and soccer or hockey net. The basketball is included with the toy. This toy will be ideal for boys and girls. It is great for indoor or outdoor use, for year round of fun.

You don’t have to worry about storage space after the party as the easy up, easy down design folds for compact storage.

It is suitable for children, aged 18 months and above.

Due to safety reasons, soft mats ARE REQUIRED to be placed below BOTH toys.

The soft mats can be rented too and the required number of pieces will depend on the size of the toys.

If you are cracking your brain to think of how to celebrate your child’s birthday! Worry no more, just contact us for our party bash. Rent toys rather than buying them!!!

Why???

You can save a lot of money and space. Furthermore, don’t have to worry about your children being sick of the toys they play everyday as we provide a wide range of toys for rental.

In collaboration with the launch of our new website, we are extending a special discount of 10% for July 2009 only.

“Visit our website RentDToyz.com to enjoy the discount. Simply indicate the promotion quote “TMH22RDT” when you rent our toys. Not in conjunction with other promotions or discounts.”

Take this great opportunity to get something different for your children.

The exact quote of the Facebook message is below:

Dear All,

Today I’m typing this message with sadness and hope. A lovely little girl, by the name of Charmaine, has been struck with a tumor and needs help in all forms - prayers, financial aid and all.

I can’t describe it better than her mum, so I’m quoting her mum from a letter to our AJCAA President directly from here -

My Charmaine has just completed 4 out of 5 rounds of chemotherapy at NUH in May. Her doctor said that Charmaine has only 10% - 20% chance to live.

I still feel very down and lost.

A few weeks ago, Charmaine’s doctor told me that a drug in New York will double up her chance of survival to 40% - 50%. Suddenly, I saw a glimpse of hope for her. Unfortunately, the drug is not available in Singapore and is not yet approved in Singapore.

I, then, asked her doctor how much I would need to gather to bring Charmaine to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC), New York for the drug. I was told USD $350,000 is required as the upfront deposit before treatment begins.

My glimpse of hope quickly vanished.

I felt numbed…I just cried…

For I felt awfully helpless…

Where am I going to find half a million Singapore dollars?!

Am I going to lose my daughter?

I don’t want to lose my child…

I want to try…

I will never forgive myself if I do not even try…

I shall try. I shall plead.

I plead with you to try to help me organise a private donation drive within your network of friends and working colleagues. You can choose from a range of fundraising ideas on Fundraising or come up with a fundraising idea of you own. Please pardon me for making this challenging request unto you. As a mother, I must try for my child. I must try. I am really really sorry if I have been rude.

Please help me. I am desperate.

If you can help Charmaine’s treatment with a private donation drive, please go to Fundraising to choose a fundraising idea and to fill in a simple form to start the ball rolling. I will be absolutely grateful!

If, for any reasons that you are unable to, do not feel bad about it. I understand. Nevertheless, I would still like to thank you for your time reading and considering fulfilling this special request.

Cynthia Lim

Her road to hope can be seen on this blog: http://ourfeistyprincess.blogspot.com/

Best Regards,
